Copying master works is a great experience, try it!

In the past, I've occasionally copied master works including those by artists I really admire like John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer...

Near Cross Farms in Holmdel

After coming back from the Scott Christensen workshop I did some paintings with his 'keying in' approach and also applied his wisdom of how the greens are much more 'red' as they recede. I could see the impact of the workshop in this painting!

Deep cut park, Middletown, NJ

An afternoon painting, this one (6x8) was quite challenging with dappled light on the bench.

I did almost all of it at Deep cut park and then rather than trying to fix it, just left it alone.

Bayonette Farm, Holmdel "Plein air" Paintings

I painted at Bayonette farm on four different days over 3 weeks.. once by myself, twice with the group, and again at the Bayonette farm arts and music festival on September 20th. There were lots of scenes to paint of sunlit and shady barns, pathways and trees. I enjoyed painting each of them (outdoors of course) though the one of the pathway & shadows was challenging.

The grey barn, 11x14 (on the right) was painted on the day of the Bayonet Farm Arts and Music festival on Sept 20th, 2009.

The Red Barn, 6x8

The grey barn (once again), 6x8
(notice the light is different though!)

Boats at Molly Pitcher inn, Red Bank, NJ

This is a 10x12 painting of a set of boats docked in the Molly pitcher inn dock. The views from the inn were stunning - i imagined this is what the french riveira or coastly Italy must look like!

Beating the winter blues!

Eleinne's workshop and the Mcpherson book inspired me to find random photographs that I took and paint them since it was cold outside. Here are two that I did (small 9x12 I think).

Bayonette Farm April 2008

Tulips were in full bloom on a big mound in Bayonette farm so I did this 12x16 a couple of weeks ago.

Hawaii Paintings 2008 Dec/Feb

Did a quick painting (~2 hours/12x16) on the beach on the big Island of Hawaii when Ashwin was taking a surfing lesson and Nikki was hanging out with Autumn. It was so spectacular just to be there and observe the blue ocean and the dark volcanic rocks - some of the pinks and purples that I saw in the water were spectacular! Came home with lots of 'blue' photos of Kuai, Maui and the Big Island and painted a couple of those amazing scenes!

Manasquan plein air

Painted plein air with the group after a long time! Used the new pochade box, new brushes..Loved the yellowstone! Its light and handy - the bogen tripod was terrific too - this set up is so much easier than the Juliann! Felt elated just being by the ocean and tried my very best to pre-mix colors, lots of it in the right values, paint thick, see shapes, and do believe that I did better! Heres the painting..small (8x10) but that was the best part..i was able to finish it!
